Congratulations to Mrs.Powell, a special education teacher at VTHS, and her students for being selected for Classroom Close-up NJ. The class will be taped on May 6th for the “Bow Wow Biscuits”. The air dates for the segment will be on Oct 27th, Dec 1st at 7:30 AM, 12:30 AM and 7:30 PM and Nov 2nd and Dec 7th at 5:30 AM.
“Bow Wow Biscuits” is a simulated business in which the students prepare and sell dog biscuits throughout the district. The students in Mrs. Powell’s Pre DILS Class (Developing Independent Life Skills) not only came up with the name of this business, but are also involved in every step of the process—from creating the brochures on the computer to preparing the biscuits in the kitchen. The actual measuring, kneading, and mixing of the dough strengthens fine motor skills while the shopping for ingredients and handling of money from the orders allows them to practice math skills. Mrs. Powell is extremely proud of her students and their continuing success and enthusiasm about this project: “Watching the application of these skills to other areas of their education has been so rewarding, especially since the students are also learning valuable life skills and vocational skills in the process. Academics has truly fused with this enjoyable hands-on project.”
